Conversely, if a puppy or dog gets dog obedience and manners training and is taught “YES!” and “NO!” then the course of their behaviors is being shaped positively towards what they need to exist in our human world. Not only do they need to be taught these more desirable behaviors and manners, but through lots of practice, repetition and consistency these good behaviors become the dog’s “go to” way of living. After all, that is what dog obedience and manner training is all about…consistency, leadership and repetition. Just like most of us humans lose our direction if we do not have structure, positive influences and discipline in our lives. If you don’t believe it, think about what happens by the midpoint of the new year for those who make new year resolutions to work out and eat healthier. According to Forbes.com, only 46% of resolutions make it through 6 months!
The exciting thing about dog training, is that when a dog learns a solid obedience foundation, practiced regularly and maintained, it can compliment the dog’s innate traits, allowing both to co-exist and minimize conflict within a dog, eliminating the tug-o-war that untrained dogs struggle with…the yo-yo of getting yelled at or disciplined, or in more severe cases, put to sleep. It is much easier on owner and dog to start dog obedience training as a puppy or adolescent compared to later in life, being reactionary to emerging problems. There is nothing more touching in my mind than to see a happy dog and happy owner (BOTH ends of the equation) when goals are achieved between owner and dog and life is being lived to the fullest.
