If you don’t know us, let me tell you a little about us. I own my own business, K9 Rules Training Camp, located in Ellenton, FL. My husband also owns his own business, Fishwater Charter Company. We live on Anna Maria Island, a barrier island that has historically been a taste of old Florida, which gets packed with vacationers and snowbirds from around the world. People always ask – “where do you go on vacation when you live HERE?” We go to the mountains. We fish in Mexico, Dominican Republic, the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico. I no longer dread Mondays and do a countdown to Fridays. Yup – it does sounds like we are really lucky to be living this lifestyle…that is until I am quickly reminded it is not luck. It is the life we purposefully CHOOSE to live.
We set goals and we attain them. We worked hard to get ourselves through college, even when faced with adversity…but that is life, isn’t it? Diamonds are created through a process of friction and pressure. We didn’t run away, tune out or give up on life when faced with challenges. We confronted the challenges head on. In retrospect, growing up, we had goals, goals of what we wanted to become and have. They say goals are just dreams that get written on paper. We weren’t that formal in our early years. We knew we wanted to live a life of more than we had at the time…more experiences, more happiness, more fun. To get there we had to take on responsibility, get more education (both formally through college courses and on our own learning), we worked a LOT of hours, we made sacrifices and saved money. We did a little selling of our souls working for big companies, by their rules, but we also learned lessons about business, sales and people that have been invaluable to us. We both traveled for work and spent a lot of our lives in airports and business hotels. You know it’s bad when you see your spouse in an airport after a business trip and had no idea he would on the same plane home as you! We sacrificed spending time with friends, family and each other. We moved to different cities and changed career paths to be able to continually improve our situation and continue pursuing learning and experiences. Lots of sacrifices. Then we decided it was time to put our long-term goals into place by starting our own businesses, being our own bosses.
Chip went first, ramping up on all he needed for his business, marketing, seeking clients, putting business strategies into place, teaming up with other captains to learn all he could about the business. Then, it was time for me to officially start my business. I had been prepping for my long-term goal of someday, somehow, working with dogs and being able to make a living by doing so. I knew going the veterinarian route was not the right path for me but for many years wasn’t sure what the path really was. I trusted I would figure it out along the way. I also knew just having my own pack of dogs wasn’t enough either. So, I started volunteering with rescue groups and groups that advocated for dogs and helped owners with challenges they were experiencing. I worked with dogs in shelters. Incredible eye-opening dog training and people experiences, both sad and happy! Then I pursued yet more education, again, both formally and on my own. I found mentors and pay close attention to what they do and how they do it to be successful. So each time someone comments on how lucky my husband and I are, I have to ask the question…does all of that sound like luck to you?? HELL NO! We made plans and goals of our life dreams and executed on them…all in due time, with lots of sacrifice, patience and diligence. We did not win the lottery, we saved our money. Yes, we got small inheritances after struggling to understand and comprehend illnesses that ravaged our families, but we were strategic with our resources we were blessed with. We did not run out and let it burn a hole in our wallets (well not all of the time anyway)…we learned to be strategic.
I sit and write this today with a tear in my eye thanks to one of my mentors, Darren Hardy. It’s a tear of pride in self-reflection and of joy in what the future holds. Does Mr. Hardy know he is my mentor and the value he brings to me? NO, unless he personally reviews who his followers are for his Daily Mentoring videos, website and Facebook pages, but he speaks to me in what seems pretty personal ways almost every day! And he really seems to know what’s going on in my life and with me and sends me information that I need to hear…everyday (by the way, you can hear from him too at http://www.DarrenHardy.com). His recent daily motivation entitled MAGIC (click the link or go to http://www.darrendaily.com/magic) talks about taking your goals to the next level of achievement by not only writing them down but establishing who you need to become in order to achieve them and get what you want in life. Don’t wish for an extra $1,000, figure out who you need to become to execute on the ability to make that extra $1,000 and bring that extra $1,000 of value to the world. “If you want to have more, you have to become more.”
I can tie this line of thought into dog training too! Many potential clients tell me that essentially they want a perfect dog, the dog that gets along with everyone, does not jump on people or bark at people or dogs and walks nicely on the leash. My challenge is to figure out what the owner needs to BECOME for her dog so she can successfully DO the training to HAVE the dog of her dreams.
Regardless of the subject, we have to learn what to BECOME, then take action and DO and execute to HAVE what more we want in life. BECOME – DO – HAVE - Pure Magic!!
